Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 19 Oct 1993

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

I propose to deal with a Notice of Motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Rabbitte. I now call on Deputy Rabbitte to state the matter on which he has given notice.

I confirm that in accordance with Standing Order 30 I have already advised your office that at the commencement of public business today I intend to request leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest, namely, the need for the Government to publish the study commissioned by the Department of Energy in the mid-eighties of expenditure incurred by Tara Mines Limited in which the State then held a 25 per cent shareholding; if evidence was found of the disbursal of large sums of money, totalling millions of pounds, to politicians and that these moneys are unaccounted for; the significance of this in the context of recent allegations that payments were made to Members of Dáil Éireann, including office holders; whether this created a conflict of interest or informed public policy on mining and the need for urgent action to implement the register of Members' interests and the enactment of the proposed ethics in Government Bill. In view of the importance of the matter, Sir, I hope that you would accede to my request for a debate.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order. Accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
