Question:208 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if she will give an update on the proposal to have a national survey on illiteracy established; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A contract has been awarded to the Educational Research Centre for the carrying out of a national literacy survey as part of an international survey.
It is now preparing for the pilot phase which is due to start before the end of the year. The report from the survey is to be available by autumn 1995.
