Subscription fees are paid by my Department in respect of membership of the following international organisations: The International Committee of Military Medicine and Pharmacy; The International Military Sports Council; The International Commission for Military History.
171 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Marine the international organisations of which Ireland is a member for which he has responsibility.
The following is a list of the relevant organisations:
International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) — an administrative organisation which co-ordinates the distribution and exchange of its members' research material, mainly to the EC Commission.
International Maritime Organisation (IMO) — the specialised agency of the United Nations concerned with maritime affairs. Its main objective is to facilitate co-operation among governments on technical matters affecting international shipping, and has a special responsibility for safety at sea and the protection of the marine environment through the prevention of sea pollution caused by ships.
International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund (IOPC Fund) — a worldwide intergovernmental organisation established to administer a system of compensation for oil pollution damage created by the Fund Convention.
Oslo and Paris Commission (Department of the Marine and Department of the Environment jointly) — two international organisations established to prevent pollution and to protect the marine environment of the North East Atlantic Ocean.
