Vol. 435 No. 3

Written Answers. - Petrol Prices.

Peter Barry

Question:

53 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will be initiating action against oil companies who are overcharging for super unleaded petrol; if, in his view, the Trades Description Act was breached; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am advised by the Director of Consumer Affairs that there is no question of breaches of Irish consumer information legislation. As there is no statutory price control on petroleum products since October 1991 overcharging does not arise.

I understand that the Automobile Association has been compaigning for greater availability of the lower-priced unleaded product and has advised motorists to influence the market by their purchasing practices.
I should like to point out that pursuant to the Retail Prices (Petrol) Display Order of 1986, persons selling petrol are required to display the retail prices of each grade of petrol in a specified manner. The Director of Consumer Affairs is charged with the enforcement of this order.
