Vol. 435 No. 3

Written Answers. - Toys Advertising.

Ivor Callely

Question:

54 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he has given consideration to the control of the advertising of Christmas toys; if he has received any submissions on the subject; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not received any submissions relating to the advertising of toys.

Legislative controls in relation to advertising are contained in the Consumer Information Act, 1978, and the Misleading Advertising Regulations, 1988.

The Consumer Information Act and the Misleading Advertising Regulations prohibit advertising which is false or misleading. In addition to these controls, all advertising in Ireland is subject to a voluntary code of advertising standards promoted by the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland.

I consider that these measures provide sufficient safeguards for consumers.
