Vol. 435 No. 5

Written Answers. - Young Offenders.

Ivor Callely

Question:

63 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if she will give a breakdown of young offenders who were placed in detention centres in the year 1992 by location, total number, sex; age, number of offences, recreational facilities available, rehabilitation programmes; if she will give details of their successes; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Prison records are not maintained in such a fashion as to give the breakdown of statistics in relation to young offenders which has been sought by the Deputy.

In relation to recreational facilities and rehabilitation programmes, I can confirm that all young offenders committed to prison have access to a full range of appropriate education and exercise facilities and medical and psychological services.
