Vol. 435 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - Chinese Persecutions-Executions.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

14 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make diplomatic representations to China to express his disapproval of the persecution of Christians and the execution of at least 300 prisoners in the first four months of 1993.

Ireland remains very concerned at reports of violations of human rights in China. I am aware of Amnesty International reports that Christians in China are being persecuted.

Our concern on the human rights situation in China, and the concerns of our partners in the European Community, have been and will continue to be brought to the attention of the Chinese authorities at every approprite opportunity.

This was done as recently as 27 September last when the Troika of EC Foreign Ministers met the Chinese Foreign Minister in New York.
