Vol. 435 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - Drogheda (Louth) Arts Facility.

Michael Bell

Question:

86 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the level of grant he will give to Drogheda Corporation for the new arts gallery; and if he will make a contribution to the running costs of the gallery.

The Deputy will be aware that the funds available to my Department are primarily earmarked for the national cultural institutions such as the National Museum and the National Library and I, therefore, do not generally have funds available for individual projects. Responsibility for such funding rests with An Chomhairle Ealaíon which enjoys statutory independence in the disbursal of its funds.

I am advised by An Chomhairle that it has been supporting the new arts facility being developed in Drogheda. This facility consists of a combined library and arts centre and An Chomhairle through its dialogue with Bord Fáilte was instrumental in securing a development grant of £250,000. In addition, An Chomhairle made a once-off payment of £20,000 from its capital fund in June 1992 to Drogheda Corporation to assist the development of the building.
