Vol. 435 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Written Answers. - Incidents at Nuclear Installations.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

34 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the number of incidents which have been reported to the Irish authorities in relation to the 13 nuclear installations located on or near the west coast of Britain, including Sellafield, under the procedures agreed by the Ireland/UK Contact Group, for the past ten years.

Since October 1985 when notification arrangements with the UK began, we are aware of 145 incidents at various nuclear installations in the UK. The vast majority of these incidents took place prior to 1989 and were minor and of a non-radiological nature. At the beginning of 1989 the reporting arrangements were refined within the UK and since then only incidents of a radiological nature are notified to us. A total of 27 incidents have been notified to us since the beginning of 1989.
