Vol. 435 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Written Answers. - School Attendance Officer Posts.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

17 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the upper age limit of 40 for applications for school attendance officer posts in the Dublin city area; and if she will amend regulations covering this as it is discriminatory, particularly against women who may have left the work-force for child rearing reasons and would very often seek to re-enter the work-force around the age of 40.

The age limit of 40 for school attendance officers was originally set out in Statutory Instrument No. 329 of 1956 and applied to appointments of school attendance officers in all committee areas.

I am having the provisions in question reviewed with a view to ensuring that they are revised as required in line with current policy and practice in the public service.
