Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Ó Cuív — the need for funding for the Athenry extension scheme to ensure an adequate water supply is provided to the town which at present has no water from 12 midnight to 7 a.m.; (2) Deputy Upton — the need to further develop the country's science and technology resources through research and development to improve the level of innovation in Irish industry; (3) Deputy Theresa Ahearn — the penal financial consequences for a farmer (details supplied) who, due to illness, failed to inform the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry of the death of an animal within the correct time limit, thereby losing almost £3,000 in beef premia; (4) Deputy Connor — the serious objections raised to the 1994 livestock and arable sector area aid scheme mapping requirements; (5) Deputy Crawford — the difficulties being experienced by the meat industry in competing with live export trade in relation to carcase weight limit regulations and the difference in the value of export refunds for live and dead cattle; (6) Deputy Foley — the need for funding to carry out the necessary improvements to the Tralee/Mallow railway line, as outlined in the National Development Plan, in view of the recent serious train accident on the line; (7) Deputy Deenihan — the action to be taken by the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications following the derailment of a passenger train between Tralee and Mallow on Thursday, 11 November 1993; (8) Deputy Owen — the urgent need for proper and adequate compensation for the horticulture and potato industries which were devastated by bad weather in May and June of this year; (9) Deputy Moynihan-Cronin — the derailment of the passenger train on the Tralee-Mallow rail line; (10) Deputy Quill — the delay in payment of salaries to approximately 700 substitute teachers in the primary sector; (11) Deputy Dermot Ahern — the need for the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications to renew his objections to any commencement of nuclear reprocessing at the THORP plant at Sellafield especially in view of recent reports on the matter; (12) Deputy Jim Higgins — the proposed closure of the 34-bed female surgical unit at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, resulting in a drastic curtailment of services for female patients as this is the only such unit at the hospital; and the urgent need for finance to enable the ward to remain open; (13) Deputy Leonard — the need for the Minister for Enterprise and Employment to give details of the administration of the Social Employment Scheme in the north-east region.

The matters raised by the following Deputies have been selected for discussion: Ó Cuiv, Owen, Foley and Jim Higgins.
