Vol. 435 No. 9

Written Answers. - Drug Addiction Statistics.

Pat Upton

Question:

226 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health if he will give an estimate of male and female drug addicts resident in all postal districts; and the illegal drugs to which they are addicted.

Statistics in respect of drug abusers are not computed on a Dublin postal district basis.

A report by the Health Research Board entitled Treated Drug Misuse in the Greater Dublin Area 1990 indicated that an estimated 1,752 persons received treatment for drug abuse in that year. Of this total, 1,296 were male and 456 were female.

The breakdown between electoral areas as outlined in the report was as follows:

Ballyfermot

228

Drumcondra (including Ballymum)

193

North Inner City

245

South Inner City

298

Remaining Electoral Areas

788

Total

1,752

The primary drugs abuse among these 1,752 drug abusers were opiates at 80 per cent, cannabis at 12 per cent and other drugs such as barbituates, amphetamines, hallucinogens, cocaine and solvents accounted for the remaining 8 per cent.
