Vol. 435 No. 9

Written Answers. - Refund of Drugs Scheme.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

233 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, under the refund of drugs scheme, a person who makes an application on the 30-31 of a particular month is not eligible to claim same within that month; his views on whether the system is fair; and if he will make amendments to this system.

The refund of drugs scheme provides for a refund of expenditure above £90 in respect of medicines purchased for consumption in any calendar quarter. If a person purchases drugs or medicine on the last day of a calendar quarter, such drugs or medicines would not normally be intended for consumption within that quarter. In these circumstances the health board will consider such expenditure for refund purposes in the following quarter in which the medicine is intended for consumption.
