Vol. 435 No. 9

Written Answers. - Mobility Allowance.

Enda Kenny

Question:

232 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Health if he intends to increase the mobility allowance for people with physical disability to £25 per week; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The mobility allowance was increased from £416 to £432 per annum in July 1993. This monthly allowance is increased annually in line with budgetary increases in social welfare and health allowances.

The mobility allowance is normally paid in addition to the disabled person's maintenance allowance of £59.20 per week or other social welfare payment. It is designed to finance the occasional taxi journey for a person with a disability who is unable to use public transport and who would benefit from trips from home. I am satisfied that the rate of allowance is adequate for this purpose.
