Vol. 435 No. 9

Written Answers. - Supplementary Capitation Grant.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

248 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the schools which have received a supplementary capitation grant for the provision of caretakers and/or school caretakers since 1 September 1992; and whether the grant was in respect of a completely new appointment, the replacement of persons engaged on social employment schemes or the replacement of full-time caretakers and/or secretaries in each case.

Under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress (PESP) introduced from 1 September 1992, 233 primary schools and 69 secondary schools are being paid an extra capitation grant for the provision of caretaking and clerical services.

These grants were paid to the boards of management who are responsible for making the necessary arrangements for the provision of caretaking and/or clerical services appropriate to the needs of the school.

Since the programme was introduced a number of schools were grant assisted under this programme either because a post that fell vacant was fillable or because the school fulfilled the criteria now operating under theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress arrangements.
