Vol. 435 No. 9

Written Answers. - Travel Facilities to Special Schools.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

273 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education the number of Donegal children attending St. Joseph's School for visually impaired boys in Drumcondra, Dublin 9; the number of Donegal girls attending St. Mary's School, Merrion, Dublin; the type of transport and allowances made for pupils travelling to and from these centres; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am advised by the school authorities that there are four children from County Donegal attending St. Joseph's School and three children attending St. Mary's School.

Children attending special schools are given special consideration in the matter of transport. My Department provides transport or, alternatively, a grant is made towards the cost of private transport arrangements, or a combination of both.

Transport vouchers are made available to enable pupils at the schools for visually impaired to travel home at weekends on mainline rail and bus services. Children are delivered to the train and bus stations by the schools in question.
