Vol. 435 No. 9

Written Answers. - Report on Incidence of Leukaemia.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

99 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health when the next report on the incidence of leukaemia in Ireland will be published in view of the fact that there has been no such report since 1986.

The report in question on "Childhood Leukaemia in the Republic of Ireland: Mortality and Incidence" which was published in 1986 was commissioned by my Department because there was no national cancer registry in existence which could give authoritive information on the mortality and incidence rates of childhood leukaemia and lymphoma. The report was not intended to be a periodic one and since its publication the National Cancer Registry Board has been established. The board, which is based in Cork, will commence full national cancer registration on 1 January next and this will, in time, result in the availability of detailed information on the incidence and prevalence of cancer.
