Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - Cost of Parliamentary Questions.

Pat Upton

Question:

142 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the number of parliamentary questions for oral and written answer, respectively, tabled to his Department since the formation of the present Government; and the total cost of dealing with these questions.

The total number of parliamentary questions dealt with by me since my Department was established earlier this year is 255, of which 98 were oral and 157 were written. Based on the average cost of answering a parliamentary question, as quoted by the Minister for Finance in February 1992, and allowing for movements in the Consumer Price Index since then, the estimated total cost of answering the 255 parliamentary questions would be of the order of £17,000.
