Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - Free Education Scheme.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

175 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on her Department's discussions with fee-charging second level schools; if she has asked these schools to enter the free education scheme; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Green Paper Education for a Changing World stated that discussions would be held with the authorities of fee-paying schools with a view to determining whether or not it would be appropriate for them to join the non-fee paying sector. I subsequently indicated in Dáil Éireann on Wednesday, 6 October, 1993 that the question of fee-paying secondary schools would be addressed after the National Education Convention. I will do this when I have received the convention report.
