Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - School Extension.

Austin Deasy

Question:

43 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, that has been made to date with regard to the provision of a permanent structure for students attending Dungarvan Vocational School, Dungarvan, County Waterford; and when work on the new permanent extension will commence.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to Question No. 157 put down by him on 6 July 1993, the architectural planning of a new vocational school building was suspended in 1987 in the light of the declining demographic trend and its implication for future post-primary enrolments in Dungarvan.

County Waterford Vocational Education Committee has recently submitted proposals for the provision of a major extension to the existing vocational school building in Dungarvan. Last April I met a deputation from the vocational education committee to discuss the proposal and, subsequently, officials of my Department have visited the vocational school.
The vocational education committee proposals, which would involve an estimated expenditure of over £1 million are now being considered within my Department in the light of assessments made by the Department officials and in the context of other relevant data concerning Dungarvan Post-Primary Centre as a whole.
