Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

161 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the possibility of Ballyowen Meadows School, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, sharing the accommodation available at Loreto School, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 51, 63, 92, 158, 160 and 161 together.

I am aware of the difficulties faced by the pupils and staff of Ballyowen Meadows Special School at present.

I can assure the Deputies that my Department is actively engaged in seeking a solution to this difficult problem. As part of this process, a range of possible alternative locations for the school have already been investigated. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, most of these have ultimately proved to be unsuitable.

However, further investigation of possible options is continuing on an urgent basis and I can assure the Deputies that every effort is being made to provide a solution which will meet the special needs of this case.

The Deputies will appreciate that the locations chosen for special schools are largely determined by the level of demand for special services in particular areas. In the case of the Ballyowen Meadows School, the vast majority of pupils come from the west side of the city and there is ongoing demand for service in this general area.
For this reason, my Department would be most anxious that any relocation which takes place will result in the retention of this special resource on the west side of the city where the demand for its service exists.
