Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - GATT Negotiations.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

161 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if, in view of the successful passage of the NAFTA agreement, his final negotiating position on the Uruguay Round of GATT is strengthened or weakened; and the consequences, if any, the NAFTA will have for Ireland.

I am pleased to note that the US Congress have approved the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). I would hope that the successful passage of this agreement would allow the US Administration to participate effectively in the final stages of the GATT negotiations.

The successful implementation of the NAFTA should lead to economic growth in the North American region and significant opportunities for the export of Irish goods and services should arise from such growth.
