Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bus Service Curtailment.

Richard Bruton

Question:

97 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the fact that as a result of various criminal activities, the late night bus service on route 42C has had to be curtailed, and that, despite numerous consultative meetings the Garda in Coolock do not have sufficient manpower to resolve the issue; the way in which this can be resolved; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of a problem that has arisen in the Moatview-Clonshaugh area in the past few months caused by a number of disorderly youths congregating, throwing stones and causing damage in general.

The late night bus service on route 42C is operated almost every night. At times when there are signs of disorder in the area, the gardaí notify Dublin Bus, who make a decision as to whether they should withdraw the service for the safety of the crew and passengers.

The Garda are giving this matter special attention and are doing everything in their power to ensure the safety of all concerned and to curb any acts of disorder and violence in the area. Two mobile Garda units are detailed to patrol in the Clonshaugh-Moatview-Priorswood area each evening and night.

The Garda hold regular meetings with the management and unions from Dublin Bus and all aspects of the situation are discussed. Senior gardaí within the division have also recently met with public representatives from the area to discuss the situation.

The community gardaí from the area, along with Dublin Bus personnel, have been visiting schools in the Coolock area to show videos to the children of the effect of disturbances on the buses and the damage and injury caused to property and passengers by throwing stones. The Garda report that these measures are proving to be successful.
Having regard to the overall demands on the force, the Garda authorities are satisfied that the policing arrangements for the Coolock district are adequate. The situation is kept under constant review by the Garda authorities to ensure that all appropriate action is taken, including the allocation of manpower, to deal with problems that arise.
