Vol. 436 No. 3

Written Answers. - Belturbet (Cavan) Security Post.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

26 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Justice if the Government will place a security post on the southern side of Aughalane Bridge, at Belturbet, County Cavan, in order to facilitate the reopening of this bridge.

The issue of closed Border roads has been raised by both myself and the Tánaiste within the framework of the Anglo-Irish Conference. I am aware that the closure of Aghlane Bridge is the focus of particular concern and I will continue — as will the Tánaiste — to highlight the unacceptable social and economic disadvantage caused to the communities affected by the closure of the bridge.

The inference in the question — that the reopening of Aghalane Bridge by the British authorities is dependent on agreement to provide a permanent Garda checkpoint on the southern side of the bridge — is not correct.
