Vol. 436 No. 3

Written Answers. - Listowel (Kerry) Garda Station.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

23 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Justice if she will make the necessary funds available to carry out improvement work at Listowel Garda Station, County Kerry in 1994.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that a major renovation scheme is required at Listowel Garda station, County Kerry. It is proposed to refurbish the existing building and to incorporate the adjacent married quarters, thereby providing much needed additional accomodation brought up to a standard which is in keeping with a modern district headquarters.

This project is at the planning stage at present. Following a recent on-site visit by officials from my Department and the Garda Housing Officer, the Office of Public Works is currently drawing up plans for the proposed renovations.

As the planning process is at a very early stage, it is not possible to say exactly when finance will be required for the Listowel project. It takes roughly one year from the initial planning stage of a project until a contract can be placed. This, of course, is provided no unforeseen problems are encountered. It is unlikely in these circumstances and, having regard to overall priorities throughout the country and available resources, that work will commence before 1995.
