Vol. 436 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Transport Stores.

Paul Bradford

Question:

34 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Justice if she has satisfied herself that the control procedures now in existence for Garda transport stores are adequate.

I am satisfied that the control procedures now in existence for the Garda transport stores are adequate. I am informed by the Garda authorities that, since the assignment of additional staff to the Garda transport stores, all stock records are now maintained up to date. In addition a system of stocktaking is carried out on a regular basis.

This is not to say, however, that there is no room for improvement. It is recognised that the manual stock control system which is in operation at present is outdated, labour intensive and time consuming to maintain. It is proposed to replace it with a computerised system. The project is being given priority at present, with a view to having a computerised system in place some time next year.

In addition, a stores audit committee was established in my Department earlier this year to examine the operation of all Garda stores, to ensure that the most efficient procedures are in place and that the best value for money is being obtained.
