Question:39 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions which were handed down for offences relating to video nasties in 1992; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I assume that the term "video nasties" referred to by the Deputy relates to videos which have been prohibited by the Film Censor under section 7 of the Video Recordings Act, 1989. I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics readily available indicate that during the year ending 31 December 1992 there were 13 prosecutions for offences in relation to possession and/or supply of prohibited videos.
