Vol. 436 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Laois School Improvements.

Gerard C. Connolly

Question:

112 Mr. Connolly asked the Minister for Education when she will have improvements carried out to a school (details supplied) in County Laois.

The question of how best to provide improved accommodation for the pupils in the school referred to by the Deputy is under consideration in my Department at present.

The combined enrolment of the schools in the centre in question is less than 700 and the demographic trends indicate that pupil numbers will decline in the long term. My Department considers that major capital expenditure should only be provided in the context of a rationalisation of school facilities in the centre. My Department will continue to consult with the school authorities in the matter.
