Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin City Centre Car Restrictions.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

156 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if he will follow the example set by Athens by introducing restrictions on cars in Dublin's city centre to prevent further pollution of the air which pedestrians breathe.

Full compliance with EU and national air quality standards is being achieved in Dublin at present. Traffic restrictions on an emergency basis would not therefore be justified on environmental grounds.

The wider question of optimising transport management in the Dublin area, having regard to environmental and other relevant factors, is being addressed under the Dublin Transportation Initiative.
