Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waste Disposal.

Helen Keogh

Question:

61 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for the Environment the names of the local authorities who have not yet prepared general waste disposal plans; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Wexford): All local authorities concerned have prepared general waste plans.

Liz McManus

Question:

63 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment if, in regard to his recent address to the Institute of Engineers Conference in which he said that 25,000 tonnes of toxic waste were unaccounted for each year, he will give the steps, if any, that are being taken to ensure that all such waste is accounted for and safely disposed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Waste statistics for Ireland are not fully up to date or satisfactory in terms of overall coverage. I intend that this position should be improved, inter alia, through the involvement of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Hazardous waste policy requirments generally will be addressed in the context of the Operational Programme for Environmental Services now being prepared. As previously stated, my Department will also sponsor, in conjunction with Trinity College, Dublin, a conference on hazardous waste management options to be held in January 1994.
