Vol. 436 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Galway School.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

166 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education when sanction will be given for the building of a new national school at Salerno, Inverin, County Galway (Roll Number 12706); if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the school has 229 pupils and should therefore be entitled to a seventh permanent teacher in September 1994; if her attention has been further drawn to the fact that there are only five classrooms in the existing school; if the delay in inviting tenders for this school will result in an increased contract price; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has agreed in principle to grant-aid a major building project at Salerno national school. This project, which includes provision for additional classroom accommodation, will be considered for inclusion in the 1994 national schools capital programme in the light of available resources and other commitments and priorities.

The staffing of primary schools for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. If a valid enrolment of 229 pupils on 30 September 1993 is confirmed by my Department, the school referred to by the Deputy will qualify for an additional assistant post with effect from 1 September 1994.
