Vol. 436 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Examinations.

Michael Creed

Question:

165 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the Republic of Ireland's qualification for the World Cup Finals, 1994, she will have arrangements made to have all Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate examinations completed before the World Cup finals begin in June 1994.

For many years now, the leaving and junior-intermediate certificate examinations have begun on a Wednesday not earlier than 5 June and not later than 11 June, and have finished on the third following Friday. This system is well understood by schools and other interested parties.

In 1994 these examinations are due to begin on Wednesday, 8 June. Schools and external leaving certificate candidates are aware of this with examination entries, school timetables and transport already arranged on this basis. In the circumstances, it is not practicable to change arrangements already made at this stage.
