Vol. 436 No. 5

Written Answers. - Industrial Action.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

47 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of days lost by industrial disputes to date in 1993; the steps, if any, he intends to take to deal with the deteriorating industrial relations situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of days lost due to industrial action to the end of September this year is estimated at 58,453, less than one third of the 185,223 days lost in the corresponding period last year. These figures are not indicative of a deterioration in the overall industrial relations sitution. I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a parliamentary question on 12 October 1993, Official Report 434, No. 4, columns 714-715, in which I outlined my views on how industrial disputes could be minimised.
