Vol. 436 No. 8

Written Answers. - Membership of State Boards-Agencies.

Liz McManus

Question:

16 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the total number of members of State boards or agencies operating under the aegis of his Department; the number who are women; the number of appointments made by him since taking office; the number of such appointments who were women; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are three State boards operating under the aegis of my Department the total membership of which is 37. Eight of these members are women. I have made five appointments since taking office, one of whom is a woman.

The Tourism Council is an advisory body, rather than a State board or agency, and comprises 23 members, six of whom are women. Twelve of the members were nominated by the tourist industry, chambers of commerce, other Government Departments and ICTU. Of the remaining 11 members, I nominated five women to the council.

It is my intention to continue to make appointments at all suitable opportunities to achieve the target 40 per cent female representation on boards.
