Question:

59 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the total number of people employed in the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland; if he will give a breakdown of the numbers employed in Irish multinational and other such companies; the numbers employed in companies with branded products and companies with generic products; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 58 and 59 together.

There are approximately 7,000 people directly employed in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector in Ireland. Of this total foreign-owned companies employ about 86 per cent and Irish-owned companies 14 per cent.

It is estimated that approximately 30 companies are engaged in the production of branded products employing about 4,000 people; and that there are some 16 producers of generic products employing about 1,000 people. The generics products are supplied to home and overseas markets but the branded products manufactured by large foreign-owned companies are mainly exported.
