Vol. 436 No. 8

Written Answers. - Bed and Breakfast Establishments.

Ivor Callely

Question:

83 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the number of registered bed and breakfast establishments; the estimated number of unlisted establishments; his views as to the reason there are so many unlisted establishments; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under the Tourism Traffic Acts Bord Fáilte is empowered to list or approve town and country homes and farmhouse accommodation generally referred to as bed and breakfast operations. There are approximately 3,713 approved premises in this category.

The current system by which visitor accommodation is registered or listed by Bord Fáilte is a voluntary one. Only those operators, therefore, who wish to be registered or listed by the Bord do so. There are no official statistics available on the number of unlisted bed and breakfast establishments but unofficial estimates range from 4,000 to 7,000.
