Vol. 437 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telecom Éireann Revenue.

Michael Noonan

Question:

17 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the current weekly loss being incurred by Telecom Éireann arising from the rescheduling of their charges on the basis of the difference between actual current weekly revenue and weekly revenue estimated on the basis of the schedule of charges and pattern of usage which existed prior to the rescheduling; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question suggests a degree of involvement in the day-to-day affairs of a commercial State body which goes beyond that allowed under section 33 (3) of the Postal and Telecommunications Services Act, 1983. Telecom Éireann announced some time ago that revenue was down by £75,000 per week arising from the short term response to the new pricing package. I understand that there is a gradual, but slow, return to normal levels of revenue.
