Question:

112 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the total number of persons employed in the peat production and electricity generating industries in County Kildare in each of the years 1973, 1983 and 1993; the plans, if any, he has to re-invigorate these industries; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

ESB and BNM have provided me with the following information in relation to the numbers employed in County Kildare in 1973, 1983 and 1993 in the peat production and electricity generation sectors.

The Government regards peat and electricity as important elements in Ireland's energy mix. Under the National Development Plan, the Government is committed to the continued use of peat for electricity generation provided the costs are not excessive.
