Vol. 437 No. 2

Written Answers. - Attacks on Motorists.

Tony Gregory

Question:

67 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the number of attacks on motorists in the last six months at the junction of Buckingham Street/Summerhill, Dublin; and the reason this junction is not patrolled by gardaí at peak traffic hours in view of the serious problem there.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that there was a total of 24 recorded robberies from passing motorists at the junction of Buckingham Street/Summerhill during the last six months. Five of these crimes were detected and persons charged.

The allocation of resources is a matter for the Garda Commissioner who has informed me that, in addition to the attention given by normal foot and mobile patrols to the area, the recently formed Task Force Unit patrols the vicinity and that local suspects are also checked on. Because of the opportunistic nature of these incidents it is not possible to provide total cover against this type of crime. However, the Garda Commissioner is confident that the measures which have been taken should prove effective in helping to deter further similar incidents.
