Vol. 437 No. 3

Written Answers. - Folk Museum Establishment.

Ivor Callely

Question:

38 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the progress, if any, that has been made with regard to the establishment of a folk museum at the Custom House Docks site; if there is a time schedule for such a development; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 340 on 6 October, 1993 columns 247 and 248 of the Official Report for that day. As I indicated in that reply, a number of options are under consideration, in the context of the formulation of an overall, coherent museums policy, for the future location of the national collection including the folklife collection.

The options include a museum venue at the Custom House Docks site. However, I should say that this site has been considered in the context of a possible relocation of the art and industries division — otherwise known as the decorative arts division — of the National Museum whereas my intention is to formulate an overall strategy to address to maximum extent possible the accommodation needs of the museum not only in relation to the location but also the exhibition and storage of the national collection in its entirety on a long term basis.
