Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Planning Permission for Afforestation.

Edward Nealon

Question:

326 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, with the increased interest in forestry plantation, particularly in the North-West of Ireland, there is a widespread feeling that the plantation of forestry, particularly large acreage, should require planning permission as it seems inconsistent to require planning permission for even a small shed on a farm while at the same time allowing an area of 100 acres to be planted with trees which would have far greater impact on the environment and the lives of the local community without any planning permission being required and with relatively little, if any, limitations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Planning permission is required for initial afforestation where the area involved is greater than 200 hectares. I have no proposals to extend this requirement.
