Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sligo Harbour Board.

Edward Nealon

Question:

355 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Marine the overall plans, if any, he has for the future of Sligo Harbour Board and the control of Sligo Harbour; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Legislation to make further and better provision in relation to the management, control, operation and development of certain harbours is being prepared at present.

In so far as harbours such as Sligo are concerned, the present proposal, which has yet to be considered by the Government, is that the new legislation will contain a provision which will enable such harbours to (i) continue to operate under the Harbours Act, 1946, (ii) be set up as commercial State companies or (iii) be transferred to local authorities. The most appropriate management framework for Sligo Harbour will be considered when the new legislation is in place and after full consultation with all interested parties.
