Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Allocation of EU Budget.

Nora Owen

Question:

493 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the amount of the EC budget allocated to internal market that has been allocated to Ireland; and the projects on which this has been spent.

The 1993 EU budget provided for a commitment of 34 mECU to cover the costs of administering the internal market. The budget was expended on a Union-wide basis and no specific amounts were allocated to individual member states.

Of this amount, 21.2 mECU was committed to meeting the standardisation and certification costs incurred by the European standard organisations i.e. CEN, CENLEC and EOTA. The remaining funds were committed to cover other costs, borne by the Commission, in the pursuit of policies to reinforce the internal market, e.g. the management of systems for mutual notification of new draft national technical regulations and standards, the administration of programmes for short term exchange of civil servants, the introduction of various initiatives in relation to communication and information policy and the preparation of studies on large scale infrastructure requirements in transport, energy and telecommunications.
