Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

561 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied), currently a mature student at Maynooth College, has only received approval in respect of an adjacent grant when, in fact, he should have qualified for the non-adjacent rate; if payment will be made in the near future; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Kildare County Council is the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the Higher Education Grants Scheme in this case. I understand from the Council that the adjacent rate of maintenance grant was awarded on the basis that, in accordance with the terms of the scheme, the person in question could reasonably be expected to travel daily between his normal family residence and the college. I also understand that the student has been afforded the opportunity of appealing that decision.

I would refer the Deputy to the Council for any further information he may require.
