Written Answers. - Student Representation on Governing Body.

Máirín Quill

Question:

144 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education when the appointment of the President of the Students Union of University College Cork to the Governing Body of the college will be made; and the reason for the delay in making this appointment.

Paul Bradford

Question:

145 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education the reason she has not yet appointed a representative of the students at UCC on the governing body of the college; and when she will make this appointment.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

152 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education the reason, as is traditional, the president of the Students Union has not been appointed to the Governing Body of University College, Cork; whether she will now make this appointment; if not, the reason therefore; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 144, 145 and 152 together.

There is no provision in the charter under which the college operates for student representation on the governing body. It has been the practice, therefore, for the President of the Students' Union to be appointed to the governing body as a Government nominee. In this context consideration had to be given to the question of gender balance in relation to such appointees. I will, however, be putting a proposal to Government shortly to appoint a student representative to the governing body.
