Vol. 438 No. 1

Written Answers. - Weights and Measure Inspectorate.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

67 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice the up to date position in relation to the proposed transfer of the weights and measures function from the Garda to local authorities; whether this arrangement will take place; and if so, when.

Negotiations have been under way for some time between my Department, the Department of Enterprise and Employment and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, which represents the Garda Weights and Measures Inspectorate, regarding the transfer of the Weights and Measures responsibility from the Garda authorities to the new Legal Metrology Service, under the auspices of Eolas.

While a definitive timescale for completion of the negotiations has not been set, it is intended that they will be intensified in the coming months with a view to reaching conclusion by mid-year.
