Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Radon Assessment Survey.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

258 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if a radon assessment survey has been carried out in County Donegal; if there are any plans to initiate such a survey in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

During 1992 a geographically-based national survey, which will run over several years, was initiated by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII). Radon measurements will be made in over 6,000 homes nationwide and statistical evaluation of the results will allow the percentage of houses above the 200 Bq/m3 reference level in each national grid square to be predicted.

In early 1993, randon detectors were sent to 142 householders in County Donegal, south of a line between Glenties and Ballybofey. A further 411 households in other parts of the county have recently responded to an invitation from the RPII to participate in the survey and radon detectors are presently being issued to these homes. All measurements are for a 12 month period and, once completed, will identify any areas at particular risk from indoor radon.
