Question:266 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the number of disabled people working in the public service; and the percentage of public sector employment this represents.
Written Answers. - Employment of Disabled People.
On the basis of the latest information available to me, the position in relation to the number of people with disabilities employed in the public sector and the percentage this represents of total number employed is as follows:
Civil Service— Number of people with disabilities employed, 764; Percentage of total: 3 per cent. Health Boards— Number of people with disabilities employed, 369; Percentage of total: 0.95 per cent. Local Authorities— Number of people with disabilities employed, 304; Percentage of total: 1.13 per cent.
The health boards and local authorities are currently reviewing the position in the light of the recently revised definition agreed by the Programme for Economic and Social Progress monitoring committee for the employment of people with disabilities with a view to establishing the up-to-date position regarding staff with disabilities employed by them.
Semi-State Sector— I do not have fully completed information in respect of semi-State bodies available to me at present. The following tabular statements set out the latest information available to me. These tabular statements are updated from time to time and the revised figures are subsequently supplied to my Department.
