Vol. 438 No. 4

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Shatter — the anomalous eligibility criteria for men and women applying to join the Garda Síochána; (2) Deputy Durkan — the subject matter of Parliamentary Question No. 56 of 4 November, 1993, in relation to the importation of a motor vehicle and subsequent imposition of duty; (3) Deputy Molloy — the reason for the delay in approving funding to enable a person (details supplied) in County Galway to attend St. Piers Lingfield Special School in England; (4) Deputy Finucane — the need to provide funding for re-roofing and other associated works at Adare Girls Primary Schools, County Limerick; (5) Deputy Sargent — the need to initiate legal proceedings in The European Court of Justice against THORP as its commissioning is likely to contravene EU directives 80/836 (as amended), 85/333 and 90/313, Article 79 of the EURATOM Treaty and the Paris Convention for the Prevention of Marine Pollution from Land-Based Sources; (6) Deputy Connaughton — the non-payment of the special beef premium to farmers, particularly in the case of the application period January-February, 1993, when the application form contained misleading information about the stamping of cattle identity cards and the age of animals eligible for the 22 months premium; (7) Deputy Dukes — the serious implications for family-run pig production units of losses continuously sustained since autumn 1992; (8) Deputy Creed — the steps it is proposed to take to protect vulnerable Irish emigrants, dependent on the British social security system, from recently announced changes disqualifying non-nationals from claiming benefit; and whether it is intended to take legal action in the matter; (9) Deputy Gay Mitchell — the need to sanction the appointment of at least two secretaries to service three schools (details supplied) in Dublin 12.

The matters raised by Deputies Creed, Shatter, Dukes and Molloy have been selected for discussion.
