Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 8 Feb 1994

Vol. 438 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

I request leave to move the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 in order to debate the following matter of urgent public concern: That Dáil Éireann resolves to direct the Minister for Social Welfare to immediately abandon his proposals to means test contributory widow's and widower's pensions as this would be a pernicious, insidious and unjust blow to those who have made contributions, including voluntary contributions, over a lifetime and that this House further notes that this proposal is likely to be unconstitutional and is an unwarranted attack on a deserving section of the community.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order. Accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

It should not be contemplated by the Minister either.
